The Sanghera Rum Company has launched Five Rivers, the world’s first Indian white spiced rum, in the UK.

Five Rivers is refined from five generations of family rum production near Jalandhar in Northern Punjab.

Made from sugarcane nourished by the five rivers – after which the product is named – that flow from the Himalayas, the liquid is re-distilled with a unique blend of Indian spices – cardamom, cassia, cloves, coriander and ginger – to extract the best flavours.

The initial taste is sweet clove and cinnamon, which then leads to a clean, dry and aromatic cardamom spice, with a long and warming peppery finish coming from the ginger. On the nose, it has a rich stewed fruit and candied citrus spiciness.

The 40% ABV rum is best served tall over ice with Indian tonic water and garnished with a slice of lime and star anise; though it also mixes well in cocktails. Innovative signature serves include the Sanghera Sour, Mai Chai and the Punjabi Punch.

“Rum has soared in popularity over the last year, but its long-standing Indian heritage and methods of production – which are recorded as early as the 7th century – aren’t widely known,” explains Taj Sanghera, founder of The Sanghera Rum Company. “India is the largest sugar producing country in the world, and we’re proud to bring the world’s first dry white spiced rum to the UK. We wanted to elevate the quality of the spirit and created Five Rivers for the western palate, in a similar way to gin, but with unmistakable Indian flavours distilled into an Indian white spiced rum that can even be enjoyed neat.”

Amit Sood has been brought on as the Brand Ambassador and comes with over 25 years’ experience in the industry. From starting as a bartender and progressing to director of training and consultancy, he has a wealth of knowledge on the category.

On his new role, Sood comments: “Being part of a brand with such strong heritage is a real honour and I’m excited to spread the message that India is the birthplace of sugarcane cultivation and the true home of rum”.
