Old Fashioned named world’s most popular cocktail

The Old Fashioned is the most popular cocktail on the planet, according to research by spirits giant Diageo, with classic recipes dominating the top ten.

The whisky-based cocktail has come in ahead of the Negroni, the Whisky Sour, the Margarita and the Moscow Mule in a survey of the world’s best bartenders looking at what are the most common drinks being ordered at bars globally.

The Espresso Martini, the Daiquiri, the Dry Martini, the Tom Collins and the Manhattan round out the top ten rankings, which take into account responses from a host of countries including the US, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Portugal, Greece, the Philippines and Hong Kong.

Made by mixing bourbon or rye whiskey with Angostura bitters, sugar, and an optional slice of orange peel or cherry to garnish, the Old Fashioned is traditionally served in a short tumbler known as an Old Fashioned glass.

Kaitlyn Stewart, World Class Bartender of the Year 2017, said: “The Old Fashioned and Negroni are classic cocktails that have stood the test of time. There are countless variations, but when executed perfectly in any bar around the world, they always taste exactly how you want them too.”

Lauren Mote, who was appointed to the newly created role of Global Cocktailian at Diageo’s luxury portfolio Diageo Reserve in June 2017, added: “We surveyed the world’s best bartenders from the four corners of the globe and it is incredible to see the renaissance of these important and timeless cocktails picking up pace everywhere. The cocktail revolution is here and it is time to embrace it.”
