Mesa Ceramics introduces the Akiko collection inspired by wabi-sabi, a Japanese aesthetic that celebrates imperfection and the synergy of nature and art.
This collection merges traditional earthy colours and patterns with innovative Portuguese research, embodying a blend of past and present. Crafted from eco-friendly vitreous stoneware, the range features an elegant, versatile design tailored for both hospitality and retail markets.
It marks Mesa’s first collection to utilise a dual glaze technique which results in a gradient effect of deep black to vibrant orange. This is enhanced further by digital printing that elevates the design’s textural qualities.
After two years of extensive research and collaboration, the collection introduces ID7, an isostatic stoneware body that combines the strength of fine porcelain with eco-friendliness through a single-firing process and advanced digital printing. This method enhances durability while maintaining a lightweight nature.
Moreover, the Akiko collection is designed with sustainability at its core. It generates no waste and avoids toxic materials, resulting in robust ceramic items that benefit from reduced gas consumption and lower CO₂ emissions during production.
Each piece is crafted for maximum resistance to damage and chipping, making it suitable for a range of establishments, from haute cuisine restaurants to large hotel chains.
For its fusion of beauty, durability and environmental responsibility, the collection has been awarded the 2025 German Design Award in the Excellent Product Design – Tabletop category.
