Spotlight: Komfid
Guest safety is becoming an increasingly important consideration across bars, clubs and the wider hospitality industry.
For Komfid, the starting point was a very specific problem: drink spiking. Its lids were created to give venues a simple and practical way to help protect drinks. But from the beginning, there was another important consideration: protection should not come at the expense of the drinking experience.
The patented wood-fibre lid sits discreetly inside the glass rather than on top of it. Openings around the edge allow guests to continue drinking naturally and directly from the glass, while the lid creates a physical barrier designed to help protect the drink. A straw can also be used, but unlike many drink-spiking protection solutions, it is an option rather than a requirement.
Because the lid sits inside the glass, bartenders can continue to use fruit, citrus and other garnish above it. The drink retains its visual presentation, while its aromas remain part of the experience. For hospitality operators, that distinction matters. A safety measure should add protection without taking away the presentation, aroma and drinking experience that went into creating the drink in the first place.
While preventing drink spiking was the reason Komfid was created, the same physical barrier has wider applications across hospitality. For hotels, resorts, rooftop bars, beach clubs, pool areas and terraces, it can also help keep flies, mosquitoes and other insects out of guests’ drinks – particularly relevant for outdoor hospitality and warmer climates. This broader application has become increasingly apparent as Komfid has expanded into Southern Europe.
Komfid lids are designed and made in Denmark from wood fibre rather than conventional plastic. The company has also developed wood-fibre drinking straws, giving hospitality operators the option of combining lids and straws within the same material concept. Komfid lids can be produced in custom colours using food-contact approved colourants, while hotel groups, bars and venues can have their own logo moulded directly into the lid.
The latest generation of Komfid has also been developed with high-volume bar operations in mind. Improved stacking enables dispenser solutions directly at the bar, making it easier to integrate drink protection into everyday service. Komfid is now expanding across Europe. Following pilot projects and market activities in several countries, the company has launched in Andalusia, Spain, including pilot projects with nightlife venues in Seville, while market development is also underway in the Netherlands and Germany. Working across different European markets is providing valuable insight into how drink protection can fit into very different hospitality environments – from nightlife venues and festivals to hotels, bars and outdoor hospitality.
Komfid will present its latest drink protection solutions at BCB Berlin 2026, while continuing to develop relationships with hospitality operators, hotel groups and distribution partners across Europe. Meet the team at Hall 18A, Stand 46.
