Spotlight: Mother of Pearl Vodka and Gin

Premium grape-based vodka and gin brand, Mother of Pearl, is bringing a distinctly Australian edge to the UK spirits market.

Created by hotelier and restaurateur Nic Hancock and international fashion brand director Nicola Thompson-Hancock, the brand draws inspiration from Australia’s unique landscapes and pristine waters.

The journey of Mother of Pearl began on a visit to a friend’s oyster farm in northern Australia. Inspired by the rigorous care needed to cultivate flawless pearls from the Pinctada oyster, the Hancocks saw an opportunity to craft spirits embodying the same purity and balance. The result is a vodka and gin that mirror the refinement and resilience of Australia’s South Sea Pinctada Pearls.

Mother of Pearl spirits are distilled from premium Australian grapes sourced from the Limestone Coast, resulting in a full-bodied, smooth flavour with a gentle mouthfeel. The vodka, naturally gluten-free and free of added sugars, is designed to appeal to the health-conscious consumer, delivering subtle creaminess and less heat on the palate- qualities ideal for those with allergies or celiac intolerance. Meanwhile, the gin, crafted with local botanicals including finger limes, Kakadu plum and native sea herbs, offers a fresh citrus fragrance and balanced finish.

According to Thompson-Hancock, mindful consumers increasingly demand transparency around production processes. “We are consistently being asked about the distilling process and the providence of our vodka,” she explains. “Mother of Pearl spirits are created in Melbourne using our dedicated 1000ltr still Elaine, with each step from distilling, bottling and packaging done ourselves. Every step in the process is managed and controlled by us, from the grapes to the bottle.”

A commitment to sustainability is at the heart of Mother of Pearl’s brand ethos. Partnering with Frugalpac, the brand utilises recyclable Frugal Bottles, which are made from 94% recycled paperboard and boast a carbon footprint up to six times lower than traditional glass. Each bottle is five times lighter than glass and uses 77% less plastic than conventional plastic bottles, underscoring Mother of Pearl’s dedication to reducing waste and preserving Australia’s natural beauty.
