Apotheke Mixology has opened its latest outpost at Moxy South Beach in Miami, bringing its botanical-led cocktail concept to the hotel.
Founded in 2008 by siblings Heather Tierney and the late Christopher Tierney, Apotheke began behind an unmarked oak door on New York City’s Doyers Street. The brand has since expanded to Los Angeles in 2018 and New York’s NoMad neighbourhood in 2022, with South Beach marking its fourth location.
Taking its name from the old-world apothecary, the concept draws on the historic use of plants in medicine, using high-proof spirits to extract flavours from herbs, botanicals and other natural ingredients.
Developed by Mixology Director Nicolas O’Connor, the cocktail menu features nine new Original Formulas created exclusively for the Miami location, alongside a rotating selection of Historic Formulas from Apotheke’s New York and Los Angeles bars. Drinks are organised into six categories according to the moods or effects they are intended to evoke: Health & Beauty, Stimulants, Painkillers, Aphrodisiacs, Euphoric Enhancers and Stress Relievers.
Among the new creations is Novia Del Sol, combining calendula-infused vodka with coconut, California orange cordial, tamarind, turmeric and Meyer lemon. Write It Off blends bourbon with Amaro Montenegro, date nectar, tamarind and matcha bitters, while Dawn Patrol brings together dark-aged rum, ube, coffee, condensed coconut milk and cardamom.
The Aphrodisiacs selection includes Bilongo, made with dark-aged rum, açai, pistachio cream, lime, goji berry, perilla and maca root, finished with Dubai chocolate bitters.
Inspired by the creative vision of co-founder Christopher Tierney, the new bar continues Apotheke’s approach to immersive interiors, drawing on the natural world while incorporating a distinct sense of play. Despite its location within Moxy South Beach, the bar is accessed independently from Washington Avenue through an unmarked entrance, maintaining the discreet character of the original New York venue.
“Apotheke doesn’t just garnish with plants like an afterthought,” says Nicolas O’Connor, Mixology Director at Apotheke. “We build the drink in collaboration with them. That celebration of flora and life is what we’re so excited to bring to South Beach.”
