Bahia del Duque in Tenerife has unveiled a new beachside dining spot, Upalupa.

With a name inspired by King Hupalupa, a guardian of Canarian heritage, the venue presents a Mediterranean menu centred on vibrant, family-style sharing plates crafted using quality local ingredients.

Head Chef Lucas Ordoñez is at the helm in the kitchen, whisking guests on a journey that explores the past, present and future of cuisine in the Canary Islands. Think black cherne wrapped in banana leaf and roasted in a Josper oven, tomahawk steak, Spanish rice layered with Iberian pork shoulder and Tenerife mushrooms, and fresh seafood caught just off Playa del Duque’s shores. Signature cocktails and low-alcohol concoctions include the Upalupa, with Havana 7, honey rum Cocal, banana liqueur, grapefruit syrup and lime, classic mojitos and caiprinhas, and summer lemonade with passion fruit and cucumber.

Designed to mirror the island’s natural palette, the restaurant and terrace are bedecked in deep reds and browns and volcanic tones, complemented by natural wood and lush tropical greenery.

“At Upalupa, our mission is to pay tribute to Mediterranean cuisine, which we believe is among the most inspiring in the world,” says Ordoñez. “We want each dish to reflect its origins, its creativity and our respect for the products we use. We focus on flavour as an essential starting point to create a complete sensory experience.”
