Beckford Group to open first hotel

Beckford Group will open the doors to Teffont House – the pub company’s first hotel set in Wiltshire’s bucolic Nadder Valley.

Located in the village of Teffont Evias and surrounded by rolling fields and ancient woodland, the property has a rich history, having been home in the 1920s to artist Henry Howard and later to the Honourable David Tennant and his wife Hermione Baddeley. Following a careful restoration and extension by Beckford Group, the house will reopen as a 17-bedroom village hotel spread across the main house, coach house and cottage.

Inside, the Sitting Room and Bar offer relaxed spaces, while the extended Orangery will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner for both residents and locals. The menu, overseen by Group Chef Adam Bristow, focuses on seasonal, locally sourced produce with a nostalgic interpretation of classic dishes, including gentleman’s relish with soldiers, oyster mushroom tart with Osmington cream and chives, hogget chop with sticky belly, pea, cavolo nero and mint, and chocolate marchioness with strawberry curd, basil and strawberry.

The wine list draws on Beckford Bottle Shop, with a bespoke Bordeaux selection available, alongside a concise cocktail list and evening nightcaps. Afternoon service will include cheese toasties, or “jaffles”, inspired by the group’s Australian heritage, served with tea.

The grounds include established gardens, a secluded wellness space and a walled garden featuring The Chicken Shed, an outdoor drinks and pop-up dining area, alongside a badminton lawn and croquet court available for both guests and village use. A private dining space, The Tack Room, will host family-style feasts in the former stable yard.

The estate also features an apple orchard, a potting shed stocked with watercolours for sketching and journalling, and access to a designated dark sky area for stargazing. Walking routes through the Nadder Valley will connect guests to the surrounding landscape, including a four-mile route to sister pub The Beckford Arms.

Interiors, designed with Natasha Hidvegi, combine powder pinks, pale blues and earthy greens with village and garden views framed by stone mullioned windows.
