New culinary experiences unveiled at The Ritz-Carlton Masai Mara Safari Camp
Luxury in the Masai Mara is traditionally defined by the view outside the tent. The Ritz-Carlton, Masai Mara Safari Camp is now shifting that focus inward, toward the charcoal fires and heritage recipes of the Kenyan kitchen.
The camp has launched Kenyan Cooking Classes, a series designed to move beyond the superficial. Promoting cultural immersion into the soul of the reserve, the focus is on three pillars of East African gastronomy: the live-fire patience of Nyama Choma, the rhythmic preparation of Ugali, and the cardamom-scented heritage of Mandazi.
The intimate, hands-on programme is offered exclusively to hotel guests, inviting travellers to step behind the apron and discover the stories, spices and techniques at the heart of one of Africa’s most captivating food cultures.
Each class is designed as a full sensory encounter. Guests are welcomed into a world where fire-kissed grills crackle over charcoal, aromatic broths simmer in gleaming copper pots, and dough is rolled with the same unhurried rhythm passed down through generations. Under the expert guidance of The Ritz-Carlton, Masai Mara’s celebrated culinary team, participants are taught the cultural significance of each ingredient, the regional variations in Kenyan cooking, and the way food has always served as a bridge between community and celebration.
At the heart of the programme are three iconic dishes that have nourished and united Kenyans for generations. Nyama Choma, the nation’s most beloved grilled meat, seasoned with nothing more than salt and patience, slow-cooked over live charcoal until tender inside and gloriously charred outside. Alongside it, guests learn the art of Ugali, Kenya’s essential staple, a firm maize porridge cooked with confidence and served as the perfect foil to rich stews and smoky meats. Finally, Mandazi, East Africa’s irresistible fried dough, lightly sweetened with coconut milk and fragrant with cardamom, and made for sharing over tea.
The Kenyan Cooking Classes at The Ritz-Carlton, Masai Mara Safari Camp are available to hotel guests as part of the property’s curated cultural experiences programme. Classes accommodate small, intimate groups to ensure a personalised experience for every participant. Guests are encouraged to book in advance with their Encholiek’s (personal butlers) upon arrival, as spaces are limited.
