Rockliffe Hall reveals first details of new restaurant

Rockliffe Hall in the North East of England has revealed the first details of its new 36-cover standalone restaurant, Atlas by James & Maria Close, which will open this summer.

Forming part of the property’s renovation plans to become a world-class, gastronomy-focused destination, the couple have developed a chef-led experience inspired by the global flavours and traditions discovered through their travels.

Diners will be welcomed into Atlas in a space dedicated to Champagne and aperitifs. Inside the restaurant, the first section of the menu will take guests on a global tour, showcasing sophisticated interpretations of James and Maria’s favourite flavours from around the world, including Asia, North America and South America.

The second section will immerse diners in the flavours and ingredients of destinations James and Maria have personally visited. For example, a memorable trip to La Rochelle in France may inspire an oyster dish crafted with respect for the region.

The restaurant space features three central kitchen islands, each with a dedicated purpose to enhance the connection between chefs and diners. One island will focus on introductory dishes, the second on the main section and sauces, and the third on patisserie. A chef’s table running parallel to the kitchen islands offers an exclusive vantage point for six guests. Visible ageing fridges, a citrus fridge and a spice wall provide a striking backdrop, showcasing the precision and craftsmanship behind the menu.

James Close will be joined by a handpicked team including his wife Maria on patisserie, Adam Molloy as Assistant Culinary Director, Shaun Hurrell as Head Chef, Jack Adams as Restaurant Manager and Manuel Ghezzi as Head of Wine.

A joint passion for wine will be a central part of the guest experience. The wine programme will be led by Manuel Ghezzi, whose previous role was Head Sommelier at The Connaught. He is tasked with building an extensive wine list that mirrors the restaurant’s global ethos, combining renowned Old and New World wines with more contemporary and unique expressions. A wine display will pique diners’ interest, while a new private wine cellar is currently being built elsewhere on the property.

Designed as a contemporary addition to Rockliffe Hall’s historic estate, the 584-square-metre pavilion will offer a sophisticated modern setting, with the external design drawing inspiration from colonnaded architecture and refined materials. The restaurant is framed by large glass windows, offering views of the expansive grounds on one side and a thoughtfully landscaped area on the other. The interiors are designed to feel luxurious, using materials and a colour palette that draw on the North East’s heritage, paired with international influences inspired by James and Maria’s travels.

“It’s great to be stepping back into the process of creating a restaurant at this level, and we’re focusing on really enhancing the guests’ experience both in Atlans and across the resort,” says James Close. “I’m particularly proud to be doing it again in the North East, which is where I’m from, and putting the resort on the global culinary map.”
