Dishoom welcomes overnight guests for first time

Dishoom has launched its first-ever Permit Room with overnight lodgings, marking a new chapter for the Indian restaurant group.

Located on the corner of Portobello Road in Notting Hill, the new venue blends the brand’s signature Bombay-inspired hospitality with a unique place to stay.

Set across three floors and designed by Macaulay Sinclair, the space includes a Breakfast Room and Bar, the First-Floor Dining Room, a tribute to former local institution First Floor, and at the top, the Permit Room Lodgings, a two-bedroom residence available from next month. Inspired by the Lodging Houses of 1860s Bombay, it offers a characterful overnight experience in a building with a rich local history, once home to the Colville Hotel, later a well-loved Irish and West Indian pub.

Permit Room Portobello is an easy-going, all-day bar-café inspired by Bombay’s old drinking dens. Open from breakfast until late, the venue transitions from neighbourhood café to cocktail bar, with vinyl DJs spinning into the night.

Two dishes exclusive to Portobello include the indulgent Permit Room French Toast: cinnamon brioche filled with melting cheese, hot honey, bacon and berries, and Crumpety Eggs Kejriwal: mustard-buttered crumpets topped with chilli cheese, crispy eggs and bacon. These join Dishoom staples like the Bacon Naan Roll, the Full Permit (a Bombay twist on a full English) and classics like the Black Daal and Mattar Paneer.

The main menu spans small plates, curries and shareables. Highlights include the Spinach Chaat, Spicy Chicken Puff, Chef’s Lamb Curry and a coconut-rich Prawn Moilee. The Tandoori Chicken, served half or whole, is a standout special.

The drinks menu caters to every kind of guest, offering Short and Boozy sips, Twisted Classics and Highballs. Signature serves include the Blushing Dawn Paloma (with kumquat, chilli tequila and mezcal), and the Thums Up Sazerac. Exclusive to Portobello is the Watermelon Sharbat Gose, brewed in collaboration with Goodness Brewery and for groups, the Kingfisher Beer Tower is a showstopper. A curated Teetotal list includes options like the Sober Summer Negroni and No-Hafta Kiwi Colada.

Rounding out the experience is a live music programme led by DJ and DAYTIMERS mainstay Rohan Rakhit, spotlighting emerging South Asian talent and global sounds from jazz to disco.
